How do you sew a queen-size quilt on a sewing machine?

What's the best way to sew a large quilt on a sewing machine? I feel like at some point there would be too much fabric to make it work. And even if you make manageable-sized squares and combine them, wouldn't it eventually get too large to fit in the machine? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
